Dramatic Irony: Dramatic irony is a situation the reader knows is going to happen but the characters are not aware of conscious of the soon outcome. It usually is opposite of what is stated in the text and it makes the motives of the characters more dramatic and understood. Dramatic irony came from Greek literature. If someone you dread, and have done wrong to says "I will be with you on your wedding night", the first thought that I would have is that they are going to do me harm. I would spend every single day and night in terror, and dreading for that day to come. I would be terrified for what is to come, and would not be able to live my life properly. This is what Victor went through when his creation said those words to him. What he failed to realize and understand is that Pieces was not implying that he is going to hurt him, but he is going to hurt Elizabeth. He wants to put Victor in the same amount of pain that he put him through. He was revenge on Victor for all the harm he has done to him. |
Tragic Irony:
Tragic irony is categorized as another type of dramatic irony. Tragic irony is used to emphasize the assertion of truth, it makes something for dramatic and understood. Tragic irony appears on the surface and it usually means something different than what is stated. The characters in the story are not fully aware of the soon to happen catastrophe that is going to happen due to the irony. Such as the reader knowing that Romeo and Juliet will die, but neither of them know that is bound do happen. Tragic Irony makes the story more interesting and to read. Just in Romeo and Juliet we know that they will die because of the prologue, we can see the use of tragic irony in the letters in the beginning of the story. The use of tragic irony in Frankenstein is not easily identified at first glance, but as you read further and analyze you can figure out the tragic irony. "Or the literary death of little William could express her anxiety over the real baby William, or a wish to dispose of her half brother William, her own younger sibling, or her father." (xxi) We see that in the letters it stated that William is dead, meaning that the death of him is going to happen during the course of the novel. The readers know that William is going to die, but none of the characters knew the fate of William. |
Satire:
Satire is the use of irony or sarcasm that ridicules or makes fun of the vices or follies of literature. It is often used for humor, or exaggeration. Often satire is used to mock political, social, or controversial standpoints. The use of satire is used through the Monster. Beauty is the most prominent aspect of the story, meaning throughout the story only the beautiful people are viewed as good, regardless of their morality. Such as Elizabeth is viewed as an angel even though she does not have good morals. The monster is viewed as something that is evil or bad, and everyone looks down upon him. Everyone shuns him, beats him, and isolates him from the rest. The monster is actually a character that genuinely has a good heart and tries to help nut no one can look past the fact that his appearance is very unfortunate. It is satirical because it shows that beauty defines who you are and where you stand (in Frankenstein), regardless of personality and their morals. |
